The 5 mistakes that kill most pet fish in the first week
Your kid just won a goldfish at the fair. Or maybe you caved and bought a betta at the pet store. Either way — you're now a fish parent, and you probably have no idea what you're doing.
Don't worry. Most people don't. But here's the thing: most pet fish die within the first week because of 5 completely avoidable mistakes.
1. No water conditioning
Tap water has chlorine. Chlorine kills fish. You need water conditioner — it's a $5 bottle that lasts months. Use it every single time you add water.
2. Overfeeding
Fish don't need much food. A tiny pinch once or twice a day is enough. If there's food floating after 2 minutes, you gave too much. Uneaten food rots and poisons the water.
3. Skipping the nitrogen cycle
New tanks need bacteria to break down fish waste. Without cycling, ammonia builds up and your fish gets sick fast. This is the #1 killer and almost nobody talks about it.
4. Wrong tank size
That little bowl from the store? Not enough. Even a single betta needs at least 5 gallons. Goldfish need 20+. More water = more stable = healthier fish.
5. No water changes
You need to change 25% of the water every week. Not the whole tank — just a quarter. Use a gravel vacuum. This takes 10 minutes and makes all the difference.
If you want the full breakdown — feeding schedules, tank setup guides, and a community of parents figuring this out together — that's exactly what we built Deep Blue Pets for.
