Why 'motivation' is the wrong thing to chase when losing weight

I've watched a lot of people try to lose weight by waiting to "feel motivated." It doesn't work, and here's why:

Motivation is a feeling. Feelings are unreliable — they show up when they want to and leave when things get hard, which is exactly when you need them most.

What actually works is a system that doesn't depend on how you feel:

1. Daily check-ins, not "when I feel like it" check-ins.

The moment accountability becomes optional, it disappears. A daily touchpoint — even just logging in and saying "I'm here" — keeps you in the game on bad days.

2. Public commitment beats private willpower.

Telling a group you're going to do something creates social pressure that's stronger than any internal pep talk. It's not about shame — it's about not wanting to let people down who are rooting for you.

3. Small daily wins compound. Big weekly goals don't.

"Lose 10lbs this month" is demoralizing on a bad day. "Show up today" is always achievable. Stack enough of those and the 10lbs happens on its own.

If you've failed at diets before, it probably wasn't a willpower problem — it was a systems problem. Fix the system, and the results follow.
