The 5 Pillars of Wellbeing (and a free exercise backed by real research)
Most people think happiness is about circumstances — a better job, more money, the "right" relationship. Decades of positive psychology research say otherwise.
The PERMA model (developed by Dr. Martin Seligman, founder of the field) breaks wellbeing into 5 measurable pillars:
Positive Emotion — savoring joy, gratitude, hope
Engagement — flow states, being absorbed in what you do
Relationships — genuine connection with others
Meaning — feeling part of something bigger than yourself
Accomplishment — pursuing and achieving goals
Here's the counterintuitive part: research (Lyubomirsky, Sheldon & Schkade, 2005) suggests only about 10% of your happiness is explained by life circumstances. Roughly 50% is genetic set point, but the remaining 40% is driven by intentional daily activity — habits you can actually build.
One free, science-backed exercise to try tonight: write down 3 good things that happened today and why they happened. This simple gratitude practice has been shown in controlled studies to measurably increase happiness and decrease depressive symptoms over just a few weeks.
Small daily inputs compound. That's the whole game.
