The problem with most yoga playlists (and how to actually match music to your flow)

Most yoga playlists are an afterthought. Someone hits shuffle on a "chill vibes" playlist and hopes for the best.

But if you've ever taught a class — or even just practiced on your own — you know the music makes or breaks the experience. A slow hip opener sequence paired with upbeat acoustic? It pulls you right out of the moment.

Here's what I've learned building flows over the years:

Match energy curves, not genres. A good flow has an arc — grounding, building, peak, cooling down. Your music should follow that same arc. Genre doesn't matter as much as energy trajectory.

Tempo matters more than you think. Vinyasa transitions feel completely different at 90 BPM vs 120 BPM. When you're sequencing, think about your breath-to-movement ratio and find tracks that support it.

Silence is underrated. Not every moment needs music. Strategic silence during savasana or deep holds creates contrast that makes the music hit harder when it comes back in.

Build the playlist AFTER the sequence, not before. Most people pick songs first and try to fit a flow around them. Flip it. Design your flow, feel the energy of each section, then curate tracks that serve each transition.

I'm building FlowState as a home for yoga teachers and practitioners who care about this stuff — custom flow building, music pairing, and a community that actually gets it.

If you're a teacher looking to level up your class design, or a practitioner who wants to build a more intentional home practice, come check it out.
