You don't need to move to Japan to speak Japanese fluently

Most people learning Japanese spend years on textbooks and still can't hold a 5-minute conversation.

Here's why: traditional study is designed to test, not communicate.

You memorize kanji stroke order for characters you'll never write by hand. You drill grammar patterns you'll never use in actual speech. You spend 80% of your time reading and 20% (if that) actually speaking.

Then you watch an anime episode and understand maybe 30% of it — even after 2 years of "studying."

What actually works:

Anime is legitimately one of the best tools for conversational Japanese — IF you use it right. The dialogue is natural, the vocabulary is varied, and you're emotionally invested in what's being said. That emotional hook is everything for retention.

The shift that changes everything: treat every episode as a coaching session, not entertainment. Pause. Repeat. Shadow the characters. Ask why a sentence is structured the way it is.

Then do real speaking — not with a language app that feels like a job interview — but in a community where you're actually talking about things you care about.

That's the whole idea behind Fluent Tokyo. Japanese, for people who already love the culture.
