Why most language exam prep fails (and what actually moves your score)

Spent years watching learners grind vocab apps for months and still miss their IELTS/TOEFL target. Here's the pattern I keep seeing:

The problem isn't knowledge. It's feedback loops.

Most self-studiers can tell you 2,000 words and every grammar rule, but they've never had someone correct their actual speaking or writing under exam conditions. You can't fix what you can't see.

Three things that actually move the needle:

  1. Timed speaking reps, recorded and reviewed. Not silent reading — actual output, under the clock, then torn apart for filler words, structure, and pronunciation.

  2. Writing graded against the real rubric. Band descriptors are public. Most people never read them. Once you know exactly what a 7 vs an 8 looks like, you stop guessing.

  3. A study plan with a deadline, not a vague 'someday.' Score plateaus happen when there's no external accountability forcing weekly progress.

Built a structured track around exactly this — weekly study plans, speaking practice, and real feedback on writing, for IELTS/TOEFL/DELF prep. If you're stuck at a plateau, happy to share what's worked. What's your current bottleneck — speaking, writing, or just consistency?
