The 3 product photos every e-commerce store needs (and why most brands get them wrong)
I've shot content for dozens of e-commerce brands, and the same mistake keeps coming up.
Most brands invest in one type of product photo — the clean white background shot — and call it a day. That's table stakes. It's not what makes someone stop scrolling and actually buy.
Here are the three shots you actually need:
1. The "In Context" shot
Show the product being used in real life. Not staged, not over-produced — just real. A candle on a nightstand with a book. A bag slung over someone's shoulder on a busy street. This is what performs on social. People need to see themselves using it.
2. The "Detail" shot
Zoom in. Show the texture, the stitching, the label. This builds trust. It says "we're proud of every inch of this product." Works especially well for DTC brands competing with cheap alternatives.
3. The "Unboxing" shot
Flat lay of everything the customer gets. Packaging, extras, the product itself. This converts fence-sitters because it answers the question: "what exactly am I getting?"
If your product pages only have studio shots on white, you're leaving money on the table. The brands that win are the ones whose content makes you feel something.
I run a content agency called Frame & Flow. We handle product photography, video, and UGC for e-commerce brands. If you want content that actually converts, check out what we offer.
