5 Things Most Homeowners Get Wrong About Concrete

Been pouring concrete in the Tri-Cities for years, and I see the same mistakes over and over. Here's what to watch out for before your next project:

1. Skipping proper base prep. The gravel base is everything. Without the right compaction and depth, your slab will crack within 2 years. We use 4-6" of compacted road base minimum.

2. Going too thin. A 3" residential driveway won't hold up to daily traffic. We pour 4" minimum for walkways, 5-6" for driveways. Costs a little more upfront but saves you a full tear-out later.

3. Not planning for drainage. Water is concrete's worst enemy. Every pour needs proper slope and drainage. Flat concrete = pooling water = freeze/thaw cracking (especially here in Eastern WA).

4. Choosing the cheapest bid. In concrete, you get what you pay for. Unlicensed crews cutting corners will cost you double when you rip it out and redo in 3 years.

5. Forgetting about finishing options. Plain gray isn't your only choice. Stamped patterns, exposed aggregate, colored concrete — options at every budget that seriously upgrade your curb appeal.
