5 things killing your small business website (and what to do instead)

Most small business websites lose customers before they even scroll.

Here's what I see over and over:

1. Slow load times. If your site takes more than 3 seconds to load, 53% of visitors bounce. Compress your images, ditch the bloated page builders, and get proper hosting.

2. No clear CTA above the fold. Visitors should know exactly what you do and what to do next within 5 seconds. "Welcome to our website" is not a headline — it's a waste of prime real estate.

3. Not mobile-first. Over 60% of web traffic is mobile. If your site looks like a shrunken desktop page on a phone, you're hemorrhaging leads.

4. Generic stock photos everywhere. People can smell inauthenticity. Use real photos of your team, your work, your space. Even phone photos beat generic stock.

5. No social proof. Testimonials, case studies, client logos — put them front and center. Trust is the #1 conversion driver for small businesses.

If any of these hit home, you're probably leaving money on the table. A clean, fast, professional site isn't a luxury — it's the bare minimum in 2026.

We build websites for small businesses that actually convert. If you're tired of your site working against you, check out what Ridge offers.
