5 financial mistakes that cost freelancers thousands every year

Most freelancers are leaving money on the table — not because they don't earn enough, but because nobody taught them the business side of freelancing.

After years of working independently and helping other freelancers get their finances together, here are the 5 biggest mistakes I see over and over:

1. No separation between personal and business expenses

If you're still running everything through one bank account, you're making tax season 10x harder and probably missing deductions.

2. Not saving for taxes quarterly

The IRS doesn't care that you forgot. Set aside 25-30% of every payment you receive. Automate it. Don't touch it.

3. Underpricing your services

Most freelancers on platforms like Upwork set their rate based on what others charge instead of what they're actually worth. Your rate should factor in self-employment tax, health insurance, retirement savings, and the time you spend NOT billing.

4. Ignoring retirement planning

No employer match doesn't mean no retirement plan. Solo 401(k)s, SEP IRAs, and Roth IRAs are all available to you — and they reduce your taxable income.

5. Not tracking expenses in real time

If you're doing it once a year before tax season, you're already behind. A simple weekly habit saves you hours and thousands in missed deductions.

I built Individual Wealth to solve exactly these problems — practical documents, trackers, and blueprints that give you a clear system. No fluff, just tools that work.
