The 3 programming concepts most developers never truly understand

After writing technical content for years, I've noticed a pattern. There are three concepts that trip up even experienced devs:


1. Concurrency vs Parallelism

Most people use these interchangeably. They're not the same. Concurrency is about structure — managing multiple tasks. Parallelism is about execution — running them simultaneously. Understanding this distinction changes how you architect systems.


2. Memory Management Beyond Garbage Collection

If you only work in GC'd languages, you're missing a mental model that makes you a better programmer. Understanding stack vs heap, ownership, and lifetimes (even conceptually) makes you write better code in any language.


3. Distributed Systems Fallacies

The network is not reliable. Latency is not zero. Bandwidth is not infinite. Until you've internalized the 8 fallacies of distributed computing, you'll keep building systems that break under real-world conditions.
