I spent two years being the guy in Paris meetings who'd start a sentence in French and get answered in English within 10 seconds. Infuriating — not because their English was bad, but because it meant I'd already lost the room.

What actually fixed it wasn't more vocabulary. It was learning to survive the first 3 sentences of any exchange without hesitating, because that's the window where people decide whether to accommodate you in English or not.

The fix: memorize and over-rehearse your openers for the 5 situations you'll actually hit at work — starting a meeting, pushing back on a deadline, asking for clarification, ending a call, and small talk before the call starts. Not vocabulary lists. Full sentences, said until they're automatic, so your brain has zero latency on them.

Once those 5 openers are reflexive, you buy yourself enough credibility that people stay in French for the rest of the conversation — even when you fumble later. Confidence in the first 10 seconds matters more than grammar for the next 10 minutes.
