French Bulldogs are incredible dogs — loyal, funny, full of personality. But they come with a learning curve most people aren't ready for.
Here are 5 things that would've saved me a lot of stress (and money):
1. They overheat fast. Frenchies are brachycephalic (flat-faced). They can't regulate heat like other breeds. Summer walks? Early morning or late evening only. Always carry water.
2. Food allergies are extremely common. If your Frenchie is itching, losing fur, or has chronic ear infections — it's probably food. Most do well on a limited ingredient diet. Chicken is a common trigger.
3. Pet insurance isn't optional. Frenchies are prone to spine issues, cherry eye, and breathing problems. One surgery can run $3,000-$8,000. Get insurance before any issues show up.
4. Not all breeders are equal. A cheap Frenchie puppy is a red flag. Health-tested parents, vet records, and transparency about lineage are non-negotiable. If they won't let you visit, walk away.
5. They need more socialization than you'd think. Frenchies can get anxious and territorial without early exposure to other dogs, people, and environments. Start young.
I built Frenchie Friends because I kept learning these lessons the hard way — and I know I'm not alone. If you've got a Frenchie or you're thinking about getting one, come hang with us.
