Most people pick up a papaya at the store, squeeze it, and hope for the best. Here's how we actually judge ripeness on the farm:

1. Color over texture. A ripe papaya shifts from green to golden-yellow starting at the bottom. If it's mostly green with a tiny yellow spot — it's not ready. Wait for at least 50% yellow.

2. The stem end tells the truth. Give it a gentle sniff near the stem. A sweet, fragrant aroma means the sugars have developed. No smell? No flavor.

3. Firmness is relative. A ripe papaya should give slightly when pressed — like a ripe avocado, not a tomato. If it's mushy, you're too late.

4. Weight matters. A heavier papaya relative to its size usually means more juice and flesh inside. Pick it up and compare.
