The 3 exercises every beginner wastes time on (and what to do instead)

Most beginners walk into the gym and gravitate toward the same three things: bicep curls, sit-ups, and the leg press machine. And honestly, none of them are going to get you where you want to be.

Here's why:

Bicep curls in isolation don't build a physique. Your biceps are a tiny muscle. If you want arms that actually look good, you need heavy pulling movements — rows, chin-ups, deadlifts. Your biceps grow as a byproduct.

Sit-ups won't give you abs. Abs are revealed through body composition, not crunches. Compound movements like squats and overhead presses engage your core way harder than any sit-up ever will.

The leg press feels productive but isn't. It lets you move big numbers in a fixed path. But barbell squats — even with lighter weight — build real strength, balance, and muscle across your entire lower body.

What to do instead:

  • Squat, bench press, deadlift, overhead press, rows

  • Progressive overload every week

  • Eat enough protein (0.8-1g per pound of bodyweight)

  • Sleep 7-8 hours

That's it. No fancy splits, no 47-exercise arm days. Just the basics done right.

I built GainVault to give beginners a clear, structured path so they stop spinning their wheels. If that sounds like you, come check it out.
