The math behind it:
Barrier Up/Down Percent ÷ √(Average Crossing Time) = Realized Volatility Estimate
This formula replaces traditional standard deviation with a more stable, real-time measure. No rolling windows. No assumptions about normal distributions.

If you're trading 0-DTE options on SPX, SPY, QQQ, or individual equities, you already know that standard technical indicators weren't built for intraday volatility. Bollinger Bands, ATR, and even VIX-derived signals lag when you need precision the most — in the final hours before expiration.
Gamma Capture solves this.
Our barrier crossing methodology measures realized volatility in real-time by tracking how frequently price crosses dynamic barriers. This gives you:
• Instantaneous volatility readings — no lookback window lag
• Adaptive barrier levels — automatically adjust to market microstructure
• Clean signals — barrier crossings are binary events, eliminating the noise from standard deviation calculations
Why this matters for 0-DTE:
When you're trading options that expire today, your edge comes from accurately pricing realized vol against implied vol. If realized vol is running hotter than what the market is pricing, you buy. If it's cooler, you sell. Gamma Capture gives you that read in real-time.
Available on NinjaTrader, TradingView, and Bloomberg Terminal.

Gamma Capture isn't just for equities and futures — it's a powerful edge for Bitcoin intraday trading.
The bands around BTC price act like Bollinger Bands, but more stable and more accurate. Here's a real strategy breakdown from today's session.
---
Setup: 1-Hour Time Intervals Starting at 9:00 AM
The chart is divided into 1-hour blocks. For each hour:
• Green horizontal line = High of the first 15 minutes (Opening Range High)
• Purple horizontal line = Low of the first 15 minutes (Opening Range Low)
Entry Rules:
🟢 BUY when BTC moves above the green opening range line AND the green probability line is higher than the red probability line.
🔴 SELL when BTC moves below the purple opening range line AND the red probability line dominates the green.
The Bottom Chart: Daily Directional Probability
The lower panel shows the probability of up vs. down for the entire day — giving you a macro bias to filter your intraday trades. If daily probability skews bullish, favor the long setups. If bearish, favor shorts.
---
Why this works:
Traditional indicators like Bollinger Bands use standard deviation, which assumes returns are normally distributed. Bitcoin's intraday moves are anything but normal — fat tails, volatility clusters, and regime changes happen constantly.
Gamma Capture's barrier crossing methodology doesn't make distributional assumptions. It measures how frequently price crosses dynamic levels, producing volatility estimates that are:
• Real-time — no lagging lookback windows
• Robust — one spike doesn't destroy your signal
• Directional — separates upside and downside volatility
Whether you're trading BTC spot, BTC futures, or BTC options, this gives you an edge the standard toolkit can't match.

Zero Days to Expiry (0-DTE) Options are options that expire on the same day they are purchased or sold. The large volume of trading in 0-DTE S&P 500 options inspired the creation of a new intraday volatility measure, Gamma Capture. Gamma Capture was created in 2024 to specifically fit the needs of 0-DTE options traders and day traders. The measure can be used to calculate 0-DTE options premium, as an input to the Black-Scholes model. Or it can be used as an up/down volatility band around the current stock, futures, or ETF price to provide buy and sell signals.
Given a certain length of time, for example a lookback window of 60 minutes…
AND given an up/down barrier percent that resets each time the barrier is crossed, say 0.0185% up and down from the current stock price…
AND given that the count of the barrier crossing is 100 times in the previous hour window…
…We use that information to calculate a realized volatility of the stock price!
The formula for Gamma Capture is:
Barrier Up/Down Percent ÷ √(Average Crossing Time)
In the example of 60 minutes, 0.0185%, and 100 crossings, the realized volatility is roughly 17.0%.
While standard deviation of log returns is a widely used volatility measure in finance, it has limitations and can fail to accurately capture the full picture of trading risk.
For example, Standard Deviation Bands fluctuate wildly during price jumps. When the bands widen tremendously, they no longer provide accurate buy and sell signals. Gamma Capture, on the other hand, remains stable even during price jumps.
Here are some reasons why standard deviation of log returns can fail:
Standard deviation assumes that log returns follow a normal distribution, which is often not the case in real-world financial markets. Financial data frequently exhibits "fat tails," meaning extreme events (both positive and negative) occur more often than predicted by a normal distribution. This can lead to an underestimation of the likelihood of significant losses or gains, as standard deviation focuses on average deviations.
Standard deviation is highly sensitive to outliers — extreme values that deviate significantly from the average. A single large positive or negative return can disproportionately influence the standard deviation, making it a less reliable measure of typical volatility.
Standard deviation treats both positive and negative deviations from the mean equally. However, investors are typically more concerned about downside risk (potential losses) than upside risk (potential gains). Standard deviation fails to differentiate between these two aspects of risk.
Financial markets often exhibit volatility clustering, meaning periods of high volatility are followed by more periods of high volatility. Standard deviation, calculated over a specific historical period, may not accurately reflect future volatility, especially in the presence of volatility clustering. Additionally, the statistical properties of financial markets can change over time (non-stationarity), making historical standard deviation a less reliable predictor of future volatility.
Standard deviation measures the volatility of individual assets but doesn't fully capture how assets interact within a portfolio. The correlations between assets (how they move together) significantly impact portfolio risk. Standard deviation, when used in isolation, may not adequately reflect the benefits of diversification in reducing overall portfolio risk.
---
While standard deviation of log returns is a valuable tool, its limitations should be recognized. Investors and risk managers should be aware of the assumptions underlying standard deviation and consider other risk measures, especially when dealing with non-normal distributions, outliers, and the need to differentiate between upside and downside risk. Alternative risk measures, such as Gamma Capture, can provide a more comprehensive view of potential losses and better account for the specific characteristics of financial markets.

The popularity of 0DTE options has shrunk the trading time scale from days to minutes. Traditional volatility measures — built on Geometric Brownian Motion and close-to-close standard deviation — were never designed for this pace. Gamma Capture was born to fill that gap.
The standard deviation of close-to-close returns and other estimators for short-duration realized volatility based on the log of price changes often lead to unstable results. Large price gaps can distort the traditional calculations for rVol, especially as the time interval shrinks to minutes or seconds.
When you're trading 0DTE options where every half-hour matters, you can't rely on a volatility estimate that breaks every time price jumps.
Gamma Capture uses an up/down barrier count function as opposed to the traditional standard deviation of log price changes. This produces stable outputs even as the time series interval shrinks to milliseconds. Price jumps are seamlessly handled.
We compute spot realized volatility with lookback windows as short as 60 minutes. This precision is what gives intraday traders the edge — you're seeing volatility in real-time, not looking at yesterday's numbers.
Determine FLEX/0DTE Option Fair Value — Decide which options are over or undervalued relative to our theoretical values
Optimal Hedge Limit Order Book — How often to rehedge and at which price levels for a desired P&L outcome
Volatility Weighted Average Price (VolWAP) — Execute options throughout the day based on volatility parameters
Intraday Volatility Term Structure — See the term structure of realized volatility updated every 60 minutes
The key insight: Volatility and price are directly correlated. Higher volatility means higher premium. Lower volatility means cheaper options. Professionals trade options based on whether implied vol is rich or cheap relative to realized vol. Amateurs look only at premium.
Gamma Capture gives you the realized vol read that the pros have — updated intraday, stable through jumps, and predictive of near-term conditions.

If you've ever watched Bollinger Bands expand on a sharp move, then snap back just as fast, you've felt the limits of a standard deviation–based view of volatility. Gamma Capture is an alternative designed for intraday decision-making — especially around 0DTE options and short-term futures trades.
The idea is simple: Measure realized volatility by counting barrier crossings, not by squaring returns.
Bollinger Bands are anchored to the standard deviation of log returns. That textbook approach assumes normally distributed returns and is highly sensitive to outliers. On modern tick- or second-level data, a few outsized moves can inflate the standard deviation, forcing bands to widen abruptly and then contract just as quickly. That leads to whipsawing visual cues and fewer actionable signals for traders who need steady intraday context.
Gamma Capture reframes realized volatility as "how often price actually trades through you."
Because the measure is based on counts, not squared returns, it's far less destabilized by single jumps. Outliers contribute to the count, but they don't blow up the statistic. The result — Gamma Capture Bands — highlights meaningful price breakouts during the trading session.
1. Straddle Break-Even Lines for Daily Moves
By annualizing the Gamma Capture volatility and feeding it into an options model, you can approximate at-the-money straddle values at various times of day. Mapping those straddle break-even levels as lines tells you whether the session's range is "earning" the premium or signaling a potential breakout beyond it. As time decays, those bands tighten — giving evolving intraday context.
2. Intraday Bands for Structure
Compared to Bollinger Bands that may balloon on a single spike, Gamma Capture Bands remain more stable. When price pushes through a band, that's a signal worth investigating for potential entries or exits — without the "now you see it, now you don't" effect that clouds judgment.
Gamma Capture was developed with 0DTE S&P 500 options in mind, but applies across asset classes — stocks, futures, crypto — and time resolutions from ticks to seconds. We're also exploring intraday term structure (60-, 120-, 180-, 240-minute lookbacks) and a bid/ask view of realized volatility.
