The 3-Second Drill That Fixed My Gravel Race Starts (Try It This Weekend)
I've coached BMX gate reactions for years, and the #1 thing I see gravel riders get wrong is they treat the start like a slow ramp-up instead of an explosion.
Here's a drill you can do in your driveway that will immediately change how your first 3 pedal strokes feel on race day.
The Standing Snap Drill
Setup: Find a flat paved surface. Put your bike in a gear that's 2 clicks harder than your normal starting gear. Clip in with your dominant foot forward, crank at 2 o'clock.
The drill (3 rounds):
Stand still, hands in the drops, weight loaded into the front pedal. Feel your quads pre-loaded — like a sprinter in blocks.
On your own "go," stomp the first pedal stroke as hard as you physically can. Not fast — HARD. There's a difference.
Count three full pedal strokes, then stop. Coast to a halt.
Rest 60 seconds. Repeat.
That's it. Three stomps. Three rounds. Under 5 minutes total.
Why This Works
Most gravel riders lose the start because they spin up gradually. They're "riding" from the line instead of "launching." The Standing Snap Drill teaches your neuromuscular system to fire maximally from a dead stop — the same skill BMX racers train obsessively.
After 2 weeks of doing this 3x per week before your normal rides, you'll notice:
Your first pedal stroke has noticeably more bite
You stop fumbling your clip-in because the loaded stance becomes automatic
You pull ahead of riders who used to beat you to the first corner
The Deeper Skill
This drill is actually the starting point of a much larger system — adapting BMX gate reaction training for gravel endurance racing. The gate snap, the cadence explosion through the first straight, reading the start surface — there's a full progression that builds on this foundation.
If the drill clicks for you and you want the complete system, that's exactly what I teach inside GravelGate Academy.
But honestly — just do the drill. It costs you nothing and you'll feel the difference in your next group ride start.
Drop a comment if you try it. I want to hear how it goes.
