Why 90% of BMX Races Are Won (or Lost) at the Gate
You can have the smoothest jumps on the track. The fastest sprint speed. The best bike money can buy.
None of it matters if you lose the gate.
In BMX racing, the start is everything. The rider who hits the first straight first controls the race. Everyone else is fighting for scraps.
Here's what most riders get wrong:
1. They react to the gate instead of anticipating it
The cadence is random, but it's not unpredictable. There are patterns in the timing window that elite riders exploit. If you're waiting for the gate to drop, you're already behind.
2. Their stance bleeds power
Most riders lose 0.1-0.3 seconds just from poor body positioning on the gate. That's the difference between the hole shot and getting pinched into turn one.
3. They train speed, not starts
You can be the fastest rider on the track and still lose because your gate snap is slow. The first pedal stroke is a skill — and most riders have never been taught how to do it properly.
What the top riders do differently
Elite gate starters don't just have fast reflexes. They have a system: a pre-gate routine, cadence recognition, optimized biomechanics, and a first-pedal power delivery that launches them off the hill.
That's exactly what I teach inside the Gate Start Mastery Program — a complete course on gate reaction, first straight speed, and race-day execution.
If you're serious about winning more races, the gate is where you start.
🏁 The gate doesn't wait. Neither should you.
