How to avoid overpaying for a diamond โ€” a sourcing guide from someone with access to 2M stones

Most people buying a diamond walk into a retail store and pay 2-3x what they should.

Here's why: the markup on retail diamonds is massive, and most buyers don't know what questions to ask.

After working in the wholesale gem trade and consulting on thousands of purchases, here's what actually moves the needle:

1. Cut is the most important factor โ€” not carat

A well-cut 1.2ct diamond will outshine a poorly-cut 1.8ct stone every time. Most people obsess over size and ignore cut grade. Don't.

2. Color and clarity have diminishing returns

Dropping from D to F color is nearly invisible to the naked eye. Same with VS1 vs VS2. These are places to save money without sacrificing appearance.

3. Where the stone comes from matters

Wholesale access = dramatically lower prices for the same quality. If your jeweler won't show you the cert or provenance, that's a red flag.

4. Always buy with a GIA or AGS certificate

No cert, no deal. Full stop.

This is the kind of guidance we provide at Carat Tier โ€” backed by 2M+ certified diamonds and gemstones. Drop a comment if you're sourcing a stone and want a second opinion.
