3 German phrases that saved me during my first week of Behördengänge (bureaucracy)

If you're relocating to Germany for work, the first wall you hit isn't the language — it's the paperwork. Here are 3 phrases that will get you through your first Anmeldung (address registration) without panicking:

  1. "Welche Unterlagen brauche ich?" — "Which documents do I need?" Ask this before you even book your Termin (appointment). Missing one document means starting the whole process over.

  1. "Ich habe einen Termin um [time] Uhr." — "I have an appointment at [time]." Say this the moment you walk in — Bürgeramt staff move fast and expect you to know your slot.

  1. "Können Sie mir das bitte langsamer erklären?" — "Could you please explain that to me more slowly?" Nobody will think less of you for asking. Speaking clearly and directly is respected in Germany far more than pretending to understand.

A few things I wish someone had told me before I started:

  • Book your Bürgeramt Termin online the day you land — slots fill up weeks in advance in most cities.

  • Bring your Mietvertrag (rental contract), Reisepass (passport), and Wohnungsgeberbestätigung (landlord confirmation) — all three, every time.

  • Photocopy everything. Germans love paper backups.

Learning the vocabulary for the exact situations you'll actually face — registering your address, opening a bank account, your first day at the office — makes a bigger difference than generic textbook German. That's exactly why I built out a course that walks through this stuff step by step. Happy to answer questions here if you're prepping for a move.
