The 5-line brief that makes overflow writing sound in-house

Agencies don't lose quality on overflow because freelancers are bad. They lose it because the brief is "write a post about X."

If a writer can't hear the client, the client can hear that a stranger wrote it.

Steal this brief. Send it with every overflow piece:

  1. Byline — whose name is on it, and what they actually sound like (blunt, academic, founder-casual).

  2. Job of the piece — rank, teach, or convert. Pick one.

  3. Audience — not "marketers." The person who would forward this.

  4. Forbidden — words, claims, and tropes this client would never use.

  5. Proof — 2 links of theirs that already sound right.

That's it. No 12-page brand book. If you can't fill those five lines, you're not ready to assign the work.

We use this on every Ghostline article. If the brief is thin, we send it back before we write a word.
