Everyone argues Messi vs Ronaldo with goal tallies and trophy counts. That's the lazy version of the debate.

The real debate is about system dependency.

Ronaldo's peak Real Madrid years worked because he was surrounded by elite service — Modric, Kroos, Benzema — all built to feed a penalty-box finisher. Take him out of that machine (see: Juventus, Man United 2.0) and his goal output stayed elite, but his all-around influence on games dropped. He became more of a finisher, less of a game-controller.

Messi's Barcelona system was built around him controlling tempo from deep — dropping into midfield, combining, then exploding into space. That's why his production barely dipped when service got worse (PSG, later Barca years) — he could manufacture his own chances instead of relying purely on service.

Neither approach is "better" in a vacuum — they're different problems being solved. Ronaldo solved "how do I convert elite service at the highest rate in history." Messi solved "how do I create dangerous situations even when the service isn't there."

That's the actual debate. Not who scored more penalties.
