Why most retail traders lose on gold — and what actually works
Gold (XAU/USD) is one of the most traded assets in the world. It's also where most retail traders blow up their accounts.
Here's why:
They trade the news, not the structure.
Every time CPI or NFP drops, gold spikes or crashes. Retail traders chase the candle. Institutional money was already positioned. By the time you enter, you're their exit liquidity.
They don't understand the session overlap.
The real moves happen during London open (8am–10am GMT) and the NY-London overlap (12pm–3pm GMT). Trading outside those windows on gold is noise. Most people don't know this.
They set stops too tight on a volatile asset.
Gold can swing 200-300 pips intraday. A 30 pip stop on XAU/USD isn't risk management — it's guaranteed loss. Your stop needs to be outside the noise, not inside it.
What actually works:
Wait for London session pullbacks into key daily levels
Confirm with order flow, not just a pattern
Wider stops, smaller position size, let the trade breathe
Take partials at first target, trail the rest
I've been trading gold for years and I now post my live setups in real time — entry, stop, and target — so you can follow along and learn the logic behind each trade.
