Why most part-time traders lose money (and it's not their strategy)

Spent years trading forex around a 9-5, and here's the thing nobody tells beginners: your entries aren't the problem. Your schedule is.

Most retail traders lose money because they try to trade during hours they don't have the bandwidth to focus — checking charts on a lunch break, entering trades half-distracted, closing positions in a panic between meetings.

The traders who actually make it part-time do one thing differently: they trade the London/NY overlap (roughly 8am-12pm EST) and nothing else. That's where the volume and volatility live. Outside that window, you're mostly trading noise.

A few things that changed my results once I stopped trying to trade "whenever":

  • Pre-planned levels only. If I don't have an entry, SL, and TP written down before the session starts, I don't take the trade.

  • One pair focus per session. Bouncing between EUR/USD, GBP/JPY, and gold at the same time is how you miss stop-outs.

  • Journal every trade, win or lose. The losers with a bad process are the ones that repeat.

If you're trading around a full-time job, the edge isn't finding a "secret indicator" — it's building a system that works within the 2-3 hours a day you actually have to give it.
