Most people chasing government contracts are looking in the wrong place

Everyone wants "government contracts" and pictures a defense deal worth eight figures. That's not where the money is for a small operator.

The real opportunity is the boring stuff: signage, uniforms, janitorial supplies, office furniture, MRO and safety gear. Agencies buy these constantly, in small dollar amounts, with short timelines, and most resellers never see the listing because they're scanning for headline contracts instead of line items.

Three things I've learned building GovFlip that apply whether you use it or not:

1. The solicitation document is the whole game. Most operators skim the summary and skip the actual requirements PDF. That's where the certifications, insurance minimums, delivery deadlines, and disqualifying fine print live. If you can't commit to reading the source document, don't bid.

2. "Estimated value" and "your margin" are two completely different numbers. A $40k opportunity with a $34k landed cost and a tight delivery window can be worse than a $12k opportunity with a $7k landed cost and 45 days to fulfill. Always work backward from capital required and realistic sourcing cost, not the headline value.

3. Competition data matters more than opportunity size. A purchase that's easy to fulfill and low-capital will usually attract more bidders. The best spread is often in categories that are slightly annoying to source — not impossible, just enough friction that fewer people bother.

None of this is legal advice or a promise of profit or award — you're always responsible for verifying your own eligibility, registrations, and compliance on anything you pursue. But if you're a small business or reseller trying to figure out where public purchasing demand actually is, that's the exact gap we built GovFlip Exchange to close.
