Git is a great camera, but a terrible security monitor.

Git’s design philosophy is simple: you consciously take photos — press the shutter, commit, commit…

Every commit is a carefully composed static snapshot. It records what you want to record, what you think matters, what you consider impressive. Or you might want to let AI auto-commit, but what if it suddenly loses the plot halfway through?

There are things Git can’t do:

· If you don’t shoot, it isn’t saved. A new file that wasn’t git added — delete it and it’s gone.

· Everything between two snapshots is lost. Half-finished code, trial-and-error steps — Git knows nothing about them.

This is Git’s design boundary. Git is essentially a “result recorder,” not a “process recorder.”

In the AI era, this boundary can be dangerous.

Your workflow today probably goes like this: ask the AI to change a piece of code, test it, if it’s not right ask it to change it again, back and forth four or five rounds. At some point you have a vague feeling — “that version just now seemed correct” — but it’s already been overwritten.

Sometimes you may not even dare to commit, because the project is in pieces. If you don’t commit, Git sees nothing.

And in this high-speed iteration, you simply can’t “take a photo” in time. One second you see a brilliant algorithm implementation; the next second it could be overwritten by another round of AI edits. It’s fine if you notice the overwrite, but what if you don’t? Then time submerges it, fades it away… I often don’t notice — I’m a coding newbie.

Using a snapshot-based tool to deal with a streaming workflow. This mismatch may be one of the root causes of the anxiety.

Of course, AI coding tools all have features to record changes. If you only use one AI tool for a project, that is indeed enough.
