The one drill that fixed my takedown defense faster than anything else
Spent years drilling sprawls in isolation and still got taken down in live rounds. What actually fixed it wasn't more sprawling — it was reactive drilling: partner shoots on a random count (1-5), you react without knowing when it's coming.
Why it works: live matches never give you a predictable rhythm. Static drilling builds muscle memory for movement, but not for reaction time under uncertainty. Reactive reps close that gap.
How to run it:
3 rounds x 1 minute
Partner calls a random number 1-5, shoots on any count within that range
You sprawl, get hips back, and reset
Rest 30 seconds between rounds
Did this 3x/week for a month and my takedown defense in live rounds jumped noticeably. Small tweak, real results.
If you're working on the same problem, happy to break down more drills like this.
