The 3 things that actually fail teen drivers on their road test (it's not parallel parking)

I've watched a lot of new drivers walk into the DMV overprepared for parallel parking and underprepared for the stuff that actually gets people failed. A few patterns:

1. Not checking mirrors before EVERY maneuver, not just lane changes. Examiners are watching your head movement constantly. Before you pull away from a curb, before a turn, before you brake hard — check mirrors. Most new drivers only do it for lane changes and lose points everywhere else.

2. Rolling stops at stop signs. A stop where the car is still moving 2mph "close enough" is an automatic fail in most states. Full stop means the speedometer reads zero, every time, no exceptions — even at 11pm on an empty road with no one around.

3. Speed control on turns, not speed control on straightaways. Most students practice hitting the speed limit on straight roads and forget to slow down BEFORE entering a turn, not during it. Braking mid-turn is a red flag to examiners because it signals you didn't plan ahead.

None of this is about talent — it's about repetition until it's automatic. That's the whole philosophy behind how we structure lessons: drill the small habits until they're boring, so test day has zero surprises.

Happy to answer questions if anyone's prepping for a road test soon.
