1. Watering on a schedule instead of checking the soil

Your plant doesn't care that it's Monday. It cares whether the soil is dry. Stick your finger 2 inches in — if it's dry, water. If not, don't.

2. Using the wrong pot

No drainage holes = root rot waiting to happen. Always use pots with drainage, and empty the saucer after 30 minutes.

3. Ignoring light levels

That "low light" label on your plant tag? It means the plant tolerates low light, not that it wants it. Most plants need bright indirect light to actually thrive.

4. Never fertilizing

Plants in pots use up their soil nutrients within months. From March to September, feed them. Half-strength liquid fertilizer every 2 weeks for most tropicals.

5. Not rotating

Plants grow toward light. If you never rotate them, they get lopsided and leggy. Quarter turn every week — that's it.
