The 3 sustainability claims that get small businesses fined (and what to say instead)

I spent the last few months digging into FTC Green Guide cases against small businesses, and the pattern is almost always the same three mistakes:

1. "Eco-friendly" with no specifics. This phrase alone has no legal meaning and regulators know it. If you can't name the exact attribute (recyclable packaging, 40% less plastic, carbon offset via X), drop it.

2. "All-natural" used as a stand-in for "safe" or "sustainable." Natural ingredients can still have a heavy environmental footprint (palm oil, for example). Customers are catching on, and so are regulators.

3. Blanket carbon-neutral claims without a named methodology. If you bought offsets, say which registry, which project, and what percentage of your emissions it covers. Vague claims are the #1 trigger for greenwashing complaints right now.

The fix isn't to stop talking about sustainability — it's to get specific. "We switched to recycled shipping mailers, cutting our packaging waste by 30% this year" holds up. "We're eco-friendly" doesn't.

I built a full curriculum walking through how to audit your actual footprint and market it defensibly — figured this community would find the claims breakdown useful either way.
