The exact hook formula that gets clips to 1M+ views
After editing 2,000+ short-form clips for YouTubers and podcasters, here's what I've learned about what makes people stop scrolling.
The 3-Second Hook Framework:
Most clips die in the first 3 seconds. Here's the formula that consistently works:
1. Pattern interrupt — Start with something visually or verbally unexpected. Don't ease into it. Cut straight to the most intense, controversial, or emotional moment.
2. Open a loop — Say something that creates a question in the viewer's mind. "Here's the one thing nobody talks about..." or "This changed everything for me..."
3. Visual proof — Show a result, a reaction, or something happening. Text on screen + someone talking = 2x the retention.
Bonus: The first word matters. Starting with "You," "This," or "I" outperforms everything else because it feels personal.
If you're a YouTuber or podcaster sitting on hours of content that nobody sees — you're leaving millions of impressions on the table. Short-form is the growth lever right now.
