The follower count trap (and what actually converts on Instagram)
Ran a few dozen Instagram audits for coaches and personal brands this year. The pattern is almost always the same: people chase follower count and ignore the two metrics that actually pay the bills.
1. Save rate > like rate. Likes are cheap and mean almost nothing to the algorithm anymore. Saves tell Instagram "this is worth resurfacing." Content that teaches something specific (a checklist, a swipeable breakdown, a before/after) gets saved 5-10x more than generic motivational posts.
2. DMs started, not comments. Comments are vanity. The accounts actually converting followers into clients are the ones engineering their captions to start a DM conversation — a question, a "comment X and I'll send you the template," a soft CTA. That's where the sales conversation begins.
If you're stuck around the same follower count for months, it's rarely a "the algorithm hates me" problem. It's usually a content-strategy problem — you're optimizing for the wrong signal.
