The one metric that actually predicts if your business will survive

Most first-time founders obsess over revenue. Makes sense — money coming in feels like progress.

But the metric that actually predicts survival? Cash flow timing.

You can do $50K/month in revenue and still go broke if your costs hit before your payments clear. I've seen it happen to smart people running real businesses.

Here's the framework I use:

  • Map your cash cycle — When does money actually land in your account vs. when do bills hit?

  • Build a 13-week cash flow forecast — Not a P&L projection. Actual cash in, cash out, week by week.

  • Keep 8 weeks of runway minimum — Revenue is a promise. Cash is a fact.

The businesses that survive year one aren't always the ones with the best product. They're the ones that didn't run out of money while figuring it out.

I break down frameworks like this every week in the Half and Whole newsletter. If you want the full playbook on building a business that actually lasts — not just grows — come check it out.
