The math behind a DIY move vs. hiring full-service movers

I just launched HaulHub, a local truck rental service, and wanted to share why I think DIY moving is one of the most underrated ways to save money right now.

A full-service moving crew for a 1-2 bedroom apartment typically runs $600-$1,500 depending on distance and crew size. A DIY move with a rented truck runs closer to $150-$250 for the day, plus your own labor (or a few friends and a pizza).

The catch has always been access — U-Haul lots book out during peak weekends, and a lot of local truck rental options are inconsistent on availability or hidden fees.

That's the gap I'm building HaulHub to close: flat $200/day truck bookings, no surprise mileage traps, and a simple chat-based booking flow instead of a call center.

If you're planning a local move in the next few months, the biggest lever isn't the truck — it's packing efficiently (get boxes 2 weeks out, not 2 days) and doing a dry run of your route to check for load-in restrictions. Happy to answer questions if anyone's mid-move planning right now.
