The 3-minute menu scan that changed how I eat out with IBS
Most people with IBS do the same thing at restaurants: stare at the menu, panic, pick something "safe-ish," and hope for the best.
Then spend the next 2 hours wondering if it was a mistake.
I used to do that too. Until I started doing something embarrassingly simple before every meal out.
I scan the menu before I leave the house.
Not in a stressful, obsessive way. Just a quick 3-minute checklist:
✅ Flag anything with garlic, onion, creamy sauces, or heavy fats
✅ Mark items as low, medium, or high risk
✅ Find 2-3 safer swaps I'd actually enjoy
✅ Write down one specific question for the waiter ("Is the sauce butter-based or olive oil?")
That's it. Three minutes. And by the time I sit down, I already know what I'm ordering.
The shift isn't just physical — it's mental. You stop feeling like you're walking into a minefield and start feeling like someone who has a plan.
The difference between "I hope this is okay" and "I already know what I'm getting" is enormous when you have IBS.
I turned this process into a worksheet system called the Hidden Menu Trigger Spotter. Six sections. Checkboxes, fill-in blanks, a simple risk scoring system. Everything you need to go from anxious to prepared in minutes.
If you've ever cancelled dinner plans because you didn't know what you'd be able to eat — this was built for you.
