Why 90% of your videos die in the first 3 seconds (and how to fix it)
I spent the last few months reverse-engineering why some short-form videos take off and others get buried at 200 views — even from the same creator, same niche, same editing quality.
It almost always comes down to the first line.
A few patterns I keep seeing in videos that actually blow up:
1. The "wrong assumption" hook — "Everyone tells you to post daily. That's actually why you're not growing." Instantly creates tension.
2. The cold open confession — Start mid-sentence like the viewer walked in on something. "...so that's when I realized my landlord was lying to me."
3. The specific number hook — "I made $4,213 last month doing this for 20 minutes a day" beats "How I make money online" every time. Specificity = credibility.
4. The direct callout — "If you're a creator under 10k followers, stop scrolling." Narrow targeting makes people feel seen.
The hook is doing 80% of the work before your content even matters. Most creators spend all their effort on editing and none on the first line.
I've been collecting and testing these patterns across niches — put together 100 of the highest-performing ones into a $1 pack if anyone wants to skip the trial and error: HookVault. Not trying to hard-sell it here, just sharing what's actually been moving the needle for the creators I work with.
