Why 1-in-4 hotel error fares actually get honored (and how to not miss the window)
Most people think error fares are a lottery ticket. They're not — they're a speed game.
Here's the actual math: roughly 1 in 4 hotel error fares get honored by the property. That sounds low until you realize most people who catch an error fare don't act on it fast enough, or they call the hotel to "confirm" — which is the #1 way to get your booking flagged and cancelled before it ever has a chance to be honored.
The 3 things that actually move the needle on getting an error fare honored:
Speed — book within the first hour of a drop. Error fares get corrected fast, usually within 2-6 hours.
Silence — never call, email, or chat with the hotel to ask if the rate is real. Let it sit. Calling attention to it increases cancellation odds.
Documentation — screenshot your confirmation page, confirmation number, and total charged the second you book. If a property does try to walk it back, your evidence is your leverage.
On the points side: if you're deciding where to redeem for a paid stay while you wait on an error fare to clear, the priority order that consistently gives the best cents-per-point value is Hyatt > IHG > Marriott > transferable bank points (Amex MR / Chase UR). Hyatt in particular punches way above its program size for luxury properties.
If you want the full weekly system — error fare drops, the subject-line testing matrix for outreach, and a launch tweet pack — that's what we run every week over at ErrorFare Academy. Happy hunting either way. 🔑
