The 50/30/20 rule is broken. Here's what actually works for college students.

Everyone tells you to follow the 50/30/20 rule. 50% needs, 30% wants, 20% savings.


Cool in theory. Useless when you're a student making $800/month from a part-time job, paying $600 in rent, and buying ramen in bulk.

  1. When money hits your account, move 10% to savings immediately. Even $20. Non-negotiable.
