Running a software house, the pattern that tanks projects is almost never code quality — it's scope ambiguity at kickoff.

Three things that consistently save 6-figure builds from blowing their timeline:

1. Freeze the architecture before the UI. Clients want to see pixels on day one. Every extra week spent nailing data models and API contracts up front saves 3-4 weeks of rework later — UI is cheap to redo, backend contracts are not.

1. Price cloud infra separately from build. Bundling AWS/GCP spend into a fixed quote punishes you the moment traffic scales. Split it: fixed fee for build, pass-through (or margin-on-top) for infrastructure.

1. Ship a staging environment in week one, not week eight. Clients who can click around a live (even empty) staging link from day one catch misunderstandings early — before you've built the wrong thing for a month.
