1. Ask for the IMEI — dial *#06# on any phone to get it. If the seller refuses, walk away.

2. Run a check — a proper IMEI lookup tells you blacklist status, original carrier, warranty info, and whether the device was reported lost/stolen.

3. Verify the model matches — scammers sometimes swap housings on cheaper models. The IMEI check confirms the exact make and model.

This takes 3 minutes and saves you hundreds.
