How I found my first overseas supplier (and landed a $4K profit margin on my first shipment)

Most people think import/export requires a warehouse, a huge bankroll, and years of experience. It doesn't.

Here's the exact process I used to find my first supplier and close my first deal:

Step 1: Pick a product category you actually understand. I started with home goods because I knew what sold well on Amazon and at local markets. Don't chase "trending" products โ€” chase what you can evaluate quality on.

Step 2: Use trade directories, not random Google searches. Sites like Alibaba are a starting point, but the real suppliers are on platforms like Global Sources, Made-in-China, and industry-specific directories. The key is verifying they're a real manufacturer, not a middleman.

Step 3: Request samples before committing to anything. I spent $200 on samples from 5 suppliers. Only 2 met my quality standards. That $200 saved me from a $5,000 mistake.

Step 4: Negotiate payment terms. First-timers always pay 100% upfront. I negotiated 30/70 (30% deposit, 70% on shipment). This is standard โ€” most beginners just don't ask.

Step 5: Start with a small MOQ. My first order was 500 units. Total landed cost: $3,100. I sold them for $7,200 in 6 weeks through a mix of Amazon and local wholesale.

The margins in import/export are real โ€” but only if you know how to source, negotiate, and ship properly. That's exactly what I teach inside Import Export Mastery.
