5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Going Solo as a Hairdresser
Going independent is one of the best decisions you can make as a hairdresser — but it's also one of the scariest.
After years of helping solo stylists across Australia set up and grow their businesses, here are the 5 biggest lessons that come up again and again:
1. You need ABN + insurance from Day 1
Not "when I get busy." Not "next month." From the very first client. Public liability and professional indemnity insurance protect you and your clients. It's non-negotiable.
2. Pricing is not about what the salon down the road charges
Your prices need to cover your costs, your time, your expertise, AND leave room for profit. If you're charging salon-employee rates while running an entire business, you're working for free.
3. A booking system saves you hours every week
Stop managing appointments through DMs and texts. A proper booking system reduces no-shows, handles reminders, and makes you look professional.
4. Compliance isn't optional (even at home)
Council regulations, safe work practices, chemical storage, ventilation — these all apply whether you're in a commercial space or your spare room. Getting this right from the start saves you massive headaches later.
5. Community changes everything
Going solo doesn't mean going alone. Having other indie hairdressers to bounce ideas off, ask questions, and celebrate wins with is the difference between burning out and building something sustainable.
