5 things I wish someone told me before I started tattooing

Everyone romanticizes tattooing until they're holding a machine for the first time and realize they have no idea what they're doing. Here are 5 things that would've saved me months of frustration:

1. Your drawing skills don't need to be perfect

You don't need to be a fine artist. What you need is clean line confidence. That comes from practice on fake skin, not from a sketchbook. Start pulling lines before you think you're "ready."

2. Hygiene isn't optional — it's the foundation

Cross-contamination is how careers end before they start. Learn proper setup, barrier methods, and disposal before you ever touch real skin. This isn't the fun part, but it's the most important part.

3. Cheap machines will teach you bad habits

You don't need a $500 setup, but a $30 Amazon kit will fight you every step of the way. A decent rotary pen machine in the $100-150 range will give you consistent results while you learn.

4. Depth is everything

Too shallow = ink falls out. Too deep = blowouts and scarring. There's a sweet spot in the dermis that you can only learn by feel. Practice on fake skin with different tensions until you can hit it consistently.

5. Your first 50 tattoos will be rough — and that's normal

Nobody starts clean. The artists you admire on Instagram have thousands of hours behind their work. Focus on fundamentals and stop comparing yourself to people 5 years ahead of you.

If you're serious about learning properly, I built a full course that walks you through everything from equipment to booking your first client. No fluff, no theory-only content — just the actual steps.
