5 mistakes new drivers make that double their insurance cost

Just passed your test? Congrats. Now here's the part nobody warns you about — your first insurance quote is probably way higher than it needs to be.

Here are 5 things I see new drivers get wrong every single day:

1. Only checking comparison sites

The big comparison sites miss a ton of providers. Some of the cheapest insurers for new drivers aren't even listed on them.

2. Choosing the wrong car

Insurance group matters more than you think. A 1.0L Corsa and a 1.2L Corsa can have a £300+ difference in premium. Small details, big savings.

3. Not adding a named driver correctly

Adding a parent can help, but doing it wrong (fronting) can void your entire policy. There's a right way to do this.

4. Ignoring telematics/black box options

Yeah, it tracks your driving. But for a new driver with no history, it can cut your premium by 30-40%. That's hundreds saved.

5. Paying monthly instead of annually

Monthly payments add 15-20% in interest. If you can pay upfront, do it. If you can't, at least factor that cost in.

I help new drivers navigate all of this and find the cheapest possible rate. If you want a personalized quote, check out my service — I compare dozens of providers and do the hard work for you.
