1. Studying trends instead of principles.

Trends expire. Color theory, spatial hierarchy, and proportion don't. The designers who actually get hired understand why a room works — not just that Japandi is hot right now. If you can't explain the rule of thirds in a floor plan, you're not ready for clients.

2. Building a portfolio of fantasy projects.

Nobody cares about your "dream bedroom" renders. Clients want to see you solve real problems — awkward layouts, tight budgets, rooms with zero natural light. Start redesigning spaces that actually exist. Your friend's apartment. A local coffee shop. Real constraints = real skills.

3. Waiting until they "feel ready" to take on clients.

You'll never feel ready. The gap between your taste and your skill will always haunt you. But here's the thing — your first client doesn't need a world-class designer. They need someone who listens, shows up, and delivers something better than what they'd do themselves. That bar is lower than you think.
