The $12 bottle that taught me more than a $200 one ever did

A few years back I dropped way too much on a 'special occasion' bottle expecting a revelation. Nothing. Then a friend handed me a $12 Cotes du Rhone at a dinner party and something clicked — because for the first time I actually paid attention instead of assuming the price tag would do the work.

Here's the thing nobody tells beginners: expensive wine doesn't teach you anything if you're not tasting deliberately. A $12 bottle tasted properly (see, swirl, smell, sip, savor) will teach you more about your own palate than a $200 bottle gulped at a party.

The real unlock for beginners isn't spending more — it's:

  1. Tasting slowly and naming what you notice, even if it's just 'this tastes like cherry'

  2. Comparing two bottles side by side instead of drinking one in isolation

  3. Writing it down. Your palate improves fast once you track it.

Started a structured course for exactly this (Sip School, if you're curious) — but honestly you can start tonight with whatever's in your fridge. Pay attention. That's 80% of it.
