The one wine tasting habit that changes everything: smell before you sip

If you only take one tip from a sommelier, make it this one: smell your wine before you taste it.

Most people skip straight to sipping, but your nose actually does more of the "tasting" work than your tongue does. Here's a dead-simple 3-step routine you can use at your next dinner, date, or party:

  1. Swirl the glass gently for a few seconds — this releases the aroma compounds.

  2. Stick your nose right into the glass and take a real inhale (not a dainty sniff). Don't overthink what you smell — just notice: is it fruity? Earthy? Floral? Spicy?

  3. Then sip, and see if what you taste matches what you smelled. It usually does, and suddenly wine stops being "just red" or "just white" and starts having actual character.

That's it. Do this a few times and you'll start noticing patterns — you'll be able to tell a jammy Zinfandel from a peppery Syrah just by nose within a few weeks.

If you're just getting started with wine and want a structured, beginner-friendly way to build these skills (tasting technique, pairing, ordering with confidence — zero pretension), we put together a full course at Vino Vero Academy. No experience required, just curiosity. 🍷
