The #1 mistake beginners make when they start boxing

Ran a lot of first sessions with total beginners over the years, and almost everyone makes the same mistake in week one: they start throwing punches before they can move.

Footwork is 80% of boxing. If your feet aren't right, your punches will always be weak, your balance will be off, and you'll gas out in two minutes. Every good boxer you've ever watched looks smooth because their feet are doing the work β€” not their arms.

So before you throw a single combo, spend real time on:

  • Staying on the balls of your feet, never flat

  • Small steps, never crossing your feet

  • Keeping your guard up while you move, not just when you punch

Master that first and everything else β€” power, speed, defense β€” gets dramatically easier. Rushing straight to combos is why most beginners plateau by week 3 and quit.

If you're starting from zero and want a structured way to learn this the right way, I put together a beginner program at Iron Fist Boxing Club. No ego, no judgment β€” just the fundamentals done properly.
