The 5 mistakes every beginner boxer makes (and how to fix them)
I've trained hundreds of beginners and they ALL make the same mistakes in their first months:
1. Dropping your hands after throwing
You throw a jab and your hand falls to your waist. That's a free shot. Fix: every punch comes back to your chin. Your guard is a wall — it never comes down.
2. Flat feet
Standing flat-footed kills your power AND your movement. Stay on the balls of your feet, slight bend in the knees. Think of a spring, not a statue.
3. Throwing arm punches
Real power comes from your hips and legs, not your shoulders. Rotate your whole body into every punch. A 60kg fighter who rotates properly hits harder than a 90kg guy who arm-punches.
4. Holding your breath
Breathe out sharply on every punch. Exhale = power + endurance. If you're gassed after 2 rounds, this is probably why.
5. Skipping defense
Everyone wants to throw, nobody wants to slip. Spend as much time on head movement and footwork as you do on combos. Boxing is the art of hitting without getting hit.
Fix these five things and you'll be better than 80% of beginners in your gym within a month.
I'm building IronBoxing Academy to give complete beginners the roadmap to learn boxing the right way — proper technique, conditioning, and fight IQ from day one.
