The exercise I tell every new client to stop doing (and what to do instead)
New clients almost always show up doing crunches for their "core." I have them stop on day one.
Crunches train spinal flexion in a range your spine barely uses in real life, and they load your lower back more than most people realize. Meanwhile the actual core — the muscles that stabilize you while lifting, running, or just carrying groceries — barely gets touched.
What I swap in instead:
Planks and dead bugs for anti-extension: teaching your core to resist movement, not create it.
Pallof presses for anti-rotation: this is the pattern that actually shows up in sports and daily life.
Loaded carries (farmer's walks, suitcase carries): builds real core strength under a real load, no crunching required.
The pattern here isn't just about abs. A lot of "classic" exercises persist because they're familiar, not because they're effective. Worth asking of anything in your routine: is this here because it works, or because it's what everyone does?
